Our community development teams are conducted under the auspices of Helps International. HELPS has developed products such as the ONIL stoves and water filters which have a dramatic impact on peoples lives. Click here to learn more about Helps' programs.
There are two ways that you may participate on one of the community development teams.
First, Cascade Medical Team inserts the community development teams, often referred to as "construction teams," into the medical teams proper. To participate on one of these teams you must apply for the medical team.
Second, there are specific HELPS Community Development teams going to Guatemala throughout the year. To find out if there is a position on a team already scheduled or If you would like to form a new team contact Cascade Medical Team Foundation. The Foundation can help organize, orient and train your team plus provide contact with Helps International who will provide needed in-country support.
Volunteers on the Construction Team need to be in good physical condition. They work at high elevations, move concrete parts and bags of gravel for the stoves, often walk long distances between homes, carry personal backpacks as well as tool bags and extra parts for stoves. Team members also should be comfortable with simple tools and basic construction concepts. Spanish language skills are always welcome.
