Helping the Team Help Others!

Purpose of the CMT Foundation

Cascade Medical Team Foundation exists to support the Cascade Medical Team, raising funds and promoting public awareness of the team’s activities and mission.

Annually the Foundation seeks funds through an annual fund-raising campaign; events held throughout the year; plus donations from individuals, businesses and other charitable foundations.

Like the medical team it supports, the CMT Foundation is an all-volunteer organization.  All donations it receives are put to work promoting the team’s healthcare mission both in Guatemala and at home in Lane County Oregon.

 Why Guatemala?

Statistics show that Guatemala is the poorest country in Central America.  The large population of ethnic Mayans which CMT serves has been ignored and oppressed for centuries.  They are vastly underserved in regards to medical and surgical care.  The Guatemalan government does not have the resources to meet this need but is willing to allow organizations such as Helps International to bring medical personnel and supplies from outside the country to help the Guatemalan people..  Our alliance with Helps International provides the essential in-country support CMT needs to carry out it’s mission.

Why Lane County Oregon?

The United Way estimates over 60,000 people in Lane County Oregon do not have health insurance or ready access to health care.  This problem is growing and many of these underserved will seek care in emergency rooms.  This is not the most effective way to care for their health problems.  Our “Cascade Medical Team Comes Home” events provide needed primary care and facilitate access for the underserved to our local medical community.

Personal Involvement?

The foundation provides unique opportunities for volunteers to serve in both medical and non-medical capacities.  Our medical teams need a full complement of all health care professions plus an extensive support staff.  Our community development teams working in Guatemala require no special skills but support our medical mission by installing energy efficient wood stoves and water filtration systems. The CMT Foundation provides an avenue for volunteers to serve in Guatemala, helping some of the world’s poorest people, or to make a substantial contribution without leaving the U.S.  It also provides an opportunity for alumni of CMT missions to continue their active involvement with the team.

 Our Mission Statement!

The purpose of the Cascade Medical Team Foundation(CMTF) is to transform lives, primarily through financial support of the Cascade Medical Team(CMT).  The CMTF may also support other projects and partnerships, both at home and abroad that further this mission.

The CMT changes lives by offering vital medical services to the poor.  It is comprised of regional health care providers and community volunteers who work in alliance with Helps International to provide essential medical services to the indigenous Mayans of the Guatemalan highlands.  Also in partnership with Helps International, the CMT initiates and supports community development projects that reduce poverty, transform lives and empower communities in Guatemala.

The CMTF and CMT change the lives of our volunteers by creating opportunities for personal growth.  Also, volunteers gain the passion, knowledge, and experience to be effective social entrepreneurs in their own communities.
